Operation Rascal
Narrative Feature Title: Operation Rascal
Genre: Political Crime Thriller / Based on True Events
Format: Scripted Narrative Feature (35mm)
Tone: Suspenseful, noir-tinged, clever, and darkly comedic
A cold war caper so absurd, it could only be true.
Logline: When a Toronto mobster is hired by North Korean agents to assassinate South Korea’s president, he flips the script, faking the hit and conning both sides in one of the most outrageous espionage scams of the Cold War.
Synopsis:
Set in 1981 at the height of Cold War paranoia, Operation Rascal dramatizes the real-life story of Charlie Yanover, a small-time Toronto mobster who finds himself at the center of an international assassination plot. Approached by North Korean agents and offered $600,000 to carry out a political hit, Charlie agrees, then promptly begins spinning an elaborate con to deceive everyone involved.
Teaming up with an eccentric ally and lured by promises of a CIA payout or South Korean protection, Charlie concocts a plan to fake the assassination, manipulate multiple intelligence agencies, and walk away with a fortune. But in a world where every move is watched, and every ally could be a spy, the stakes escalate fast.
Filmed across Toronto, Seoul, and Vienna, Operation Rascal delivers a stylized, noir-inspired thriller that fuses historical intrigue with criminal absurdity. The story moves at a taut pace through a shadowy landscape of diplomatic backchannels, surveillance tails, and criminal improvisation, where bluffing is a survival skill, and one mobster’s wild scheme nearly reshapes history.
With its razor-sharp dialogue, period-authentic visuals, and pulpy political tension, Operation Rascal is a stranger-than-fiction tale of con artistry, loyalty, and Cold War chaos. It’s not just a film about espionage, it’s a bullet-riddled reminder that, sometimes, the biggest threat to world powers is a man with nothing to lose and a very good lie.
